Essential Post-Surgery Tips for Hand Recovery

Recovering from hand surgery requires patience, care, and a clear plan. Your hand is a complex structure, and healing properly is crucial to regain strength and function. I want to share essential post-surgery tips for recovery that will help you navigate this process smoothly. These tips are practical and easy to follow, designed to support your healing journey step by step.

Understanding Your Hand Surgery and Recovery Process

After surgery, your hand will need time to heal. The type of surgery you had—whether it was for a fracture, tendon repair, or skin cancer removal—affects your recovery timeline. You might experience swelling, stiffness, or discomfort. These are normal but should be monitored .

Here’s what you should expect:

  • Initial immobilization: Your hand may be in a splint or cast to protect the surgical site.

  • Pain management: You will have been prescribed pain medication, such as Hydromorphone, and should take this regularly with over-the-counter options.

  • Follow-up appointments: Will have been made with a Hand Therapist and myself

It’s important to follow your Hand Therapist's instructions carefully. Avoid rushing your recovery, as this can lead to complications or prolonged healing.

Practical Post-Surgery Tips for Recovery

Taking care of your hand after surgery involves several key steps. Here are practical tips to help you recover effectively:

  1. Keep the surgical site clean and dry. Do not remove the dressing for 5 days. After that MOST dressings can be removed, the hand washed with soap and running water, and a new dressing applied. if you are in a CAST - leave the dressing alone until seen by aHand therapy or me.

  2. Elevate your hand. Keeping your hand elevated above heart level reduces swelling. Use pillows to prop it up, especially in the first 5 days, but longer is fine.

  3. Manage pain and swelling. Take regular analgesics.

  4. Perform gentle exercises. If you are NOT in a cast: start gentle range-of-motion exercises to prevent stiffness. Avoid lifting

  5. Avoid smoking. These will slow healing and increase the risk of complications.

  6. Eat a balanced diet. Proper nutrition supports tissue repair. Include protein, vitamins C and D, and zinc-rich foods.

Remember, every patient’s recovery is unique. If you notice increased redness, severe pain, or unusual discharge, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

The Role of Hand Therapy in Hand Recovery

Hand therapy plays a vital role in regaining hand function after surgery. A trained therapist will guide you through exercises tailored to your specific needs. These exercises improve flexibility, strength, and coordination.

What to expect from physical therapy:

  • Customized exercise plans: Based on your surgery type and healing stage.

  • Manual therapy: Techniques to reduce scar tissue and improve mobility.

  • Education: Learning how to protect your hand during daily activities.

Commit to your therapy sessions and practice exercises at home as instructed. Consistency is key to a successful recovery.

How to Prevent Complications During Recovery

Preventing complications is essential for a smooth recovery. Here are some tips to help you avoid common issues:

  • Watch for signs of infection: Increased redness, warmth, swelling, or pus at the surgical site.

  • Avoid overusing your hand: Follow activity restrictions carefully to prevent re-injury.

  • Protect your hand from injury: Use protective gear if recommended, especially when returning to work or hobbies.

  • Stay hydrated: Proper hydration supports healing and reduces swelling.

  • Attend all follow-up appointments: These allow your surgeon to monitor healing and address any concerns early.
