Recovering from surgery can feel overwhelming. You want to heal quickly and avoid complications. I understand how important it is to have clear, practical guidance during this time. That’s why I’m sharing essential post-surgery care tips that will help you manage your recovery confidently. These tips are especially useful if you have undergone plastic, hand, or reconstructive surgery in Ottawa, where expert care and attention to detail are crucial.
Key Post-Surgery Care Tips to Follow
After surgery, your body needs time and support to heal properly. Following these post-surgery care tips can make a significant difference in your recovery experience:
Follow instructions carefully. This is the foundation of your recovery. Your surgeon knows your procedure and your health best.
Keep the surgical site clean and dry. This helps prevent infection. Use only the recommended cleaning methods and dressings. If you have steristrips on the wound, you can shower and pat them dry. They will eventually fall off, or they can be removed in due course, but there is no need to change them. Mepore dressings are not waterproof, and as such should be replaced if you get the site wet. Bandages and platercasts are definitely not waterproof and you should wear a plastic bag over your hand for showering. There is also a difference between washing your hand with soap and water, which is usually allowed 5 days after a simple hand surgery, or soaking the hand, as in washing up /swimming etc , which is only allowed a minimum 2 weeks after surgery. Some surgeries require you to keep the wound dry for longer.
Manage pain effectively. Take prescribed medications on schedule. Don’t wait until the pain becomes severe. You take less painkillers this way, than if you wait until teh pain in intolerable.
Rest and avoid strenuous activities. Avoid lifting heavy objects or sudden movements. This can disrupt blood clots in the wound and you can bleed, this can then turn into an infection, and possibly a seroma.
Stay hydrated and eat nutritious foods. Proper nutrition supports tissue repair and boosts your immune system. Protein is important for healing. Zinc, Vitamin C important too.
Attend all follow-up appointments. These visits allow me to monitor your healing and address any concerns early.
Elevate the operated limb. this reduces swelling and discomfort.
Remember, every surgery and patient is unique. If you notice unusual symptoms like excessive swelling, redness, fever, or severe pain, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Understanding the Importance of Post-Surgery Care Tips
Post-surgery care is not just about comfort; it directly impacts your healing outcomes. Proper care reduces the risk of complications such as infections, delayed wound healing, and scarring. If you have had skin cancer removal or complex hand surgery, meticulous wound care and protection are vital to preserve function and appearance.
In Ottawa, where the climate can vary, you might need to adjust your care routine slightly. For instance, cold weather can affect circulation, so keeping the surgical area warm (but not overheated) is important. Also, avoid exposing healing skin to direct sunlight to prevent pigmentation changes.
By following these tips, you empower yourself to take control of your recovery. This proactive approach can shorten healing time and improve your overall experience.

Pain management is a key part of post-surgery care. Uncontrolled pain can slow healing and affect your mood. Here’s how to handle it effectively:

Use cold packs. Applying ice (wrapped in a cloth) can reduce swelling and numb pain.

Practice relaxation techniques. Deep breathing or meditation can ease discomfort.
Avoid alcohol, smoking and marijuana . These can interfere with pain medication and delay healing.
If pain persists or worsens despite these measures, contact me asap. You may need to have an adjustment to your treatment plan.

How to Maintain Mobility and Prevent Complications
After hand or reconstructive surgery, maintaining gentle mobility is important to prevent stiffness and improve function. However, you must balance activity with rest:
Follow my guidance on exercises. If you are in a cast, the cast needs to stay on. You will be referred to a Hand Therapist, who will take you through the exercises you need to regain mobility, in a controlled manner
Avoid overusing the affected area. Gradually increase activity as healing progresses, under the auspices of a hand therapist
Watch for signs of blood clots. Swelling, pain, or redness in the limbs should be reported immediately.
Wear compression garments if advised. These can reduce swelling and support circulation.
No exercise to start with. If you have had aesthetic surgery, please wait to go back to the gym for 4-6 weeks. You run the risk of a bleed, infection and a seroma,
