An arm lift is an operation to reduce the laxity and excess fat of the upper inner arm.
The scars from a brachioplasty can be:
• Either a short scar in the armpit only
• Or a longer scar on the hidden inside of the upper inner arm
Barbara Jemec will discuss and explain the best option for you with you at the consultation.
A Brachioplasty is performed under General Anaesthesia and always involves liposuction of the area first. Depending on the amount of excess skin the scar can either be short or long. The short scar is hidden in the armpit and the long scar is hidden on the inside of your arm though it stretches from the armpit to the elbow. You will have a drain (thin plastic tube to drain away excess tissue fluid) from each arm, which is removed the next day.
You can go home the same day or stay in overnight and you will have painkillers and antibiotics to take home.
The wounds are taped and you are advised to wear supportive sleeves for the next 2-4 weeks, during which time you should avoid vigorous exercise. Depending on your job you should take 1-2 weeks off work.
The potential complications from a brachioplasty are:
• A bleed in the arm which necessitates your return to theatres for the blood to be removed
• Infection
changed sensation in the area around the scar
