Rhinoplasty is an operation to reshape the nose and relieve breathing problems.
The scars from a rhinoplasty are inside your nose (closed rhinoplasty), possible with a small scar across the columella (the outside end of the septum between the nostrils – open rhinoplasty)
A rhinoplasty is performed under General Anaesthesia and if the septum is included in the operation you will have nasal packs which are removed the next day.
After the rhinoplasty you will have a plaster on your nose for 7 days and if you have external stitches these will come out at day 3.
You can go home the same day or stay in overnight and you will have painkillers and antibiotics to take home.
It takes up to a year before you see the final result of a rhinoplasty because of swelling and immediately after the operation you will have a blocked nose for a couple of weeks.
If you have an open rhinoplasty the sensation of the tip of your nose may be altered.
There are several points which can be addressed with a rhinoplasty and Barbara Jemec will discuss your options with you at the consultation.
You should sleep with three pillows or a couple of phone books under the head end of your bed and avoid bending down for the first three days at least. You may be bruised for up to two 2 weeks, during which time you should avoid vigorous exercise. Depending on your job you should take 1-2 weeks off work.
The potential complications from rhinoplasty surgery are:
Bad scars (on columella only)
A bleed
Infection
Assymmetry
